Re: Welcome & Introduce Yourself

Hi Priyank, Welcome to the Android developer community, and congratulations on being in the final semester before graduation! What would be a suitable Android project for your final semester as a computer engineering student? You should pick something in a domain area which interests you. For example, if you are an audiophile, you could select a project that relates to music. If you are a book lover, you could choose a project that relates to written works. If you enjoy cinema, go for a project that involves movies. For example, there is a clever music app called Shazam that can listen to a few seconds of music, and identify the song and artist. Perhaps you could create a similar app for "famous quotes". You may need a large, intelligent server back end to do the searching. Another excellent project would be to reimplement a "universal translator" that Google just got working in their labs. This does speech-to-speech real time language translation. The first step is to turn the first spoken language into text (there's a client library for this). Then go to the google server to translate the text into the desired other language, get the text back for that, and use another client library to "speak" the text. Awesome demo! Good luck, and I hope these ideas help. Peter Android Technology Evangelist

Hi Manish,

Good to hear from you.  I haven't seen any PHP scripts written specifically for Android devices (though there's no reason why you can't be the first).   Classic PHP is a server-side scripting language designed to generate web pages dynamically.  Mobile devices, like Android phones and tablets, are classic client side devices.

If you want to look into Android native development, you can download MOTODEV studio from this website (here) and the SDK and tools from developer.android.com.   It takes about an hour to download and install everything.  If you are not familiar with Java, that's a good technology to learn - you'll need it for Android.   An alternative is to leverage your PHP skills, and look into HTML5 and javascript, and build some web apps that way.

Re: Welcome & Introduce Yourself

Hello All,

My name is Steven Wycoff, and I am currently a student at the University of Phoenix, and a wedding coordinator at the Los Angeles County Arboretum. I haven't built any apps yet, but I really want to learn how to develop apps and software for my phone, since I am constantly using it. I thing it would be nice to look at my phone and be able to say " Aha I made this!"

Thank you for this opportunity, and I look forward to working with everyone.
