Tips for Pricing Your Application in China

by Henry_Yao Motorola on 11-01-2011 01:24 AM - last edited on 11-02-2011 11:02 PM by Community Manager

The business opportunity in China is big and to tackle that opportunity it is very important that your application is priced according to China Market’s conditions.  Though every application offers different benefits and experiences, let us give you some generic tips to help you getting the right price for your application:

• Investigate first your competitors and industry pricing
• Put an integer price in CNY to your application to allow transactions in all available payment mechanisms
• Make sure your application is priced competitively, China is more sensitive to price than other countries.
• Do NOT just convert a USD or EUR market price into CNY. Remember China’s price sensitivity. To give you an idea of price differences, in the US a can of Coca-Cola is around 0.99USD while in China is around 1.8 CNY (just 0.28 USD)
• Most popular paid applications are average between 1 and 2 CNY

A lower price may impact total revenues but will help you increase your user base.  These are just generic tips to help you understand the Chinese market and benefit from its huge potential. We believe, however, that you are the only one who knows the value behind your application and what the right price may be.

Remember that you can always change the price of your application through MyApps dashboard at http://developer.motorola.com

Wishing you great success in the China market!

SHOP4APPS Featured App of the Month- Vendetta Online

by Nicole Mcmorran (nmcmorran) Motorola on 04-27-2011 09:27 AM - last edited on 04-27-2011 09:28 AM

Hey Android devs,

I just finished playing Vendetta Online on the Motorola XOOM. Has anyone ever played before?

For those of you who don't know what Vendetta Online is; it is a 3D space combat MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game). As the character in the game you get to drive a cool spaceship in the Vendetta Universe. There are many different factions and regions, and the more activities you do related to skill, more missions will become available. Watch out though for pirates, and astertroids that could be mined. The really neat aspect of this game is that you can play on your PC, and then seamlessly transfer to your tablet when you leave home, and the game will pick up where you left off. There's also an online community where you can chat live with other players during the game.

My co-worker, Randy, interviewed John Burgman, lead developer at Guild Software (creators of Vendetta Online). Vendetta Online has already been available on PCs and Burgman talks about the experience of porting Vendetta Online to the Motorola XOOM. Burgman says one of the most difficult parts of porting was coming up with the right user interface, especially for action-based games with a lot of twitch combat. Watch the video below to see a demo of the app and learn more about about Vendetta Online on the Motorola XOOM.

What was the most difficult part about porting your app to Android 3.0? How did you adapt your app for the tablet form factor? Leave a comment below or tweet your answer to us on Twitter @motodev

Galaxy on Fire 2- Coming Soon to the Motorola XOOM

by Nicole Mcmorran (nmcmorran) Motorola on 03-31-2011 12:42 PM - last edited on 04-02-2011 04:50 PM

Hey Android devs,

Last week at CTIA my co-worker, Randy, met with Fishlabs, a game developer company based out of Germany. Fishlabs is in the process of optimizing their app, Galaxy on Fire 2, for the Motorola XOOM. Galaxy on Fire 2 players control the fate of mercenary, Keith Maxwell, who gets catapulted 35 years into the future and wakes up in a totally different galaxy. This game has a large galaxy with over 20 solar systems and unique situations Keith must overcome. It even has 3D animation planets and Action Freeze which is a 3D screenshot tool to save screenshots from any perspective and upload them to Facebook™.

In the podcast interview below, Andreas Stecher from Fishlabs talks about how they redeveloped graphics for the game because the detail of the graphics is really improved on the XOOM. Galaxy on Fire 2 is not currently in the Android market for XOOM but it is coming very soon. To get more information about Fishlabs and Galaxy on Fire 2 you can visit their web site at www.fishlabs.net.

Hey devs,

Attending CES this year I had the opportunity to meet the developer of the Kiss My Valentine™ app, Wayne Irving.  Wayne works at Iconosys, Inc. which, besides Kiss My Valentine, includes a number of innovative and fun apps, such as Black Flyday, Drive Reply and Roadside Assistance.  All of these apps have reached huge popularity and have even been featured on shows like Saturday Night Live and Good Morning America.

Starting 7 days from Valentine’s Day, the Kiss My Valentine app gives users a daily reminder of the quantities and descriptions of the gifts they need to shop for their special someone.  You can also pre-program your phone to send SMS kisses, hugs and messages on that special day or send a digital custom sweetheart message to your sweetheart any time, any day of the year.  This app is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese.

We are excited about Kiss My Valentine launching on our store, SHOP4APPS and look forward to other new apps from Iconosys in the near future.

SHOP4APPS is now recruiting Chinese New Years Apps

by Moderator on 01-14-2011 12:24 PM - last edited on 01-14-2011 12:24 PM

Hey Android devs,

Your Health & Fitness apps were awesome; we appreciate all your submissions during our campaign. If you have not submitted your app yet, there is still time to submit your Health and Fitness app to have it featured during our Health and Fitness Promotions in January!

SHOP4APPS now accepting Chinese New Years Apps for promotion on MOTOPICKS

For the next several weeks we are inviting developers to submit their Chinese New Year Apps to SHOP4APPS.

All APPS submitted will be featured as a MOTOPICK and in our desktop web promo spots with top APPS selected being featured in our main feature promotion, and highlighted as the "App of the Month."

Be sure to get your app in early as the deadline for app submission is Jan 31st.  Submit your apps to SHOP4APPS  and you will receive confirmation on your entry into the campaign.

Background about Chinese New Year

Every year in the Bay Area we looking forward to watching an amazing broadcast for the celebration of Chinese New Year. Thousands of people gather in China Town in San Francisco to watch one of the top 10 parades in the world. Gorgeous floats and elaborate costumes make their way down the streets of China Town, delighting spectators who stand in awe. The most spectacular component to this parade is probably the Golden Dragon, ("Gum Lung"), which is meant to chase away evil spirits; it takes over 100 men and women to carry this 250 foot dragon. The date of Chinese New is decided by cyclical lunar dating. Therefore the first day of the year can begin anywhere between late January and the middle of February. This year the start of the New Year falls on February 3rd, 2011-The Year of the Rabbit. Many of you may already know that Chinese New Year is one of the most important Chinese holidays, and there are many traditions included in the celebration. The celebration lasts for 15 days, each day honoring different Chinese Gods. Food is probably the most important tradition in the celebration. Many different types of food are considered to be good luck, but a warning to the chef to take special care to preserve the good fortune of the food. Another important tradition is the giving of money to friends and family members for it brings good fortune and good luck to them throughout the New Year.  The most common tradition of giving money is to give newly printed money in red envelopes. Finally, Chinese New Year is the time when as many members of the family as possible get together to enjoy the celebration. Mostly adults in the family get together to play one of the most popular Chinese games called, Mah-jongg.

App Ideas for Chinese New Year

I've gathered some ideas to help you get started building a Chinese-New-Year-themed app.

  • Mah-jonng is a very popular game and consumers would love to be able to play with their friends and family members on their Android phones
  • Food is such an important part of the celebration, but it must be prepared so that is retains its good fortune. An app with recipes and important details about preparation would be very useful
  • The Golden Dragon is meant to chase away the evil spirits. A live wall paper would be useful as well as enjoyable for Android users
  • A count-down app to the New Year would help Android users make sure they celebrate right on time
  • An app that sent a virtual red envelope with money provided through an electronic payment system would make it easier for Android users to send money to their friends and relatives easily.
  • An app that showed all the New Years events and celebrations in the area, and perhaps a social component that notified the user if a friend of family member was going to be attending that event

What other ideas do have for Chinese New Year apps? Let us know by leaving a comment below, or tweeting to us on Twitter @motodev.

Thanks,

App of the Month - Wine Ph.D.

by Moderator on 12-07-2010 01:11 PM - last edited on 12-07-2010 02:07 PM

We sat down with Dave Lauinger to learn more about their Android app.  Here is some of what we learned about this exciting app designed for wine enthusiasts!

What does Wine Ph.D. do?

Wine Ph.D. offers consumers a couple hundred thousand wines in a database which allows users to research wines by winery, region, varietal, and make intelligent buying decisions.  It has wine makers, tasting notes and professional ratings.  It also allows you to take your favorite wines and put them in a cellar called My Wines.  Wine Ph.D. is a full service application which benefits you when making wine selections and drinking wines.

  What's new with Wine Ph.D.?

A new feature is the addition of restaurants, which allows you to pull up the wine list to get notes, rating and cost to determine which wine you want to purchase.   You can select from thousands of wineries, add to your favorites list, and include your tasting notes.    Where can consumers find your Android app?   You can find our app on the Android Market and on SHOP4APPS by Motorola currently available in China, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico.

If you would like to learn more about Wine Ph.D. check out the video interview with Dave Lauinger from Wine Ph.D. at CTIA 2010 in Las Vegas.

App of the Month: KiGOL, the Official Soccer Social Network

by Moderator on 11-04-2010 04:17 PM - last edited on 11-05-2010 12:10 PM

Hi All

I had a chance to talk with Todd Cohen, President & Co-Founder of KiGOL, the Official Soccer Social Network, to learn more about KiGOL and their newly developed app on the Android platform.

1.) Tell us about your app?

KiGOL was founded to revolutionize the way people experience and explore the game of football (Soccer to US fans). The new KiGOL Android application extends the experience of the game into the real world through the use of a unique set of social tools. Fans can follow their favorite players and teams with real-time scores and in-game stats, set custom game alerts, and share information with each other about their favorite teams and players. The more 'check-ins’ to games, stadiums and other local places users accumulate, the greater the chance of becoming a 'Super Fan' of their team. Fans can follow the matches live and interact with their friends and other fans around the match and from around the world. Points and badges are awarded for completing challenges including "checking-in" to live matches, stadiums and other venues, unlocking additional features and building on the excitement of the game. With the launch of our new application, we've taken the game of football back to the streets to connect with fans on a whole new level.

2.) How does KiGOL compare to other mobile soccer apps on the market?

There are numerous applications available that simply re-purpose data and display the latest scores and statistics on players and teams, but we wanted to go beyond scores and stats. We wanted to take the game from the field, to the streets, to the palm of your hand. We set out to take advantage of the mobile devices ability to tap into a user's physical location and use this as a basis to enhance the game. The KiGOL app extends the gameplay into the real world through live game check-in's and location based game play.

3.) We understand that LATAM specifically is a great market for KiGOL.  How big is soccer in LATAM?

It's hard to describe in words how big the game of football is in LATAM. I've been living in Brazil for the past 8 months and it's been an amazing experience. It truly is more than just a game here. Generation after generation of families follow and support the same team for life. It's common to hear fireworks and cheering echoing throughout the city streets when a big game is on TV, especially when someone scores. When you walk past a taxi stand or a bar, people are glued to the TV set watching the latest game. During the World Cup this year, the entire city of Sao Paulo shut down. It's not just the men that follow the sport, women are also avid football fans. I was speaking with someone recently who did a good job of summing it up. He said "if you take the sport of football in LATAM, it's equal to, if not greater than the popularity of all of the US sports combined".

4.) I know this is your first app developed on the Android platform.  Can you share your experience developing for Android?

Mobile application development is something that's relatively new for us. The workflow is different from what we are use to dealing with for building on the web. Although, it's always interesting to work in new directions, especially with such a talented mobile team. We love the openness of the Android platform and we are excited by all of the possibilities it offers. We are looking forward to pushing the boundaries and creating more innovative mobile applications on the Android platform.

5.) Can we look forward to more Android apps from KiGOL?

In short, yes! We are very excited to be launching our first application on the SHOP4APPS store for the Android platform. We have a number of projects we are discussing internally for the Android platform and there is a good chance you will be seeing more from us on the Android platform in the near future.

6.) I understand KiGOL joined Motorola at Adobe MAX 2010?

Yes we were in booth showcasing our KiGOL android app.  You can also listen an interview with my brother Shawn Cohen Co-Founder of KiGOL who was on hand at Adobe MAX to learn more about KiGOL.com and tips for the future of the social world online.

Interview with the Makers of the #Android Game Sky Siege

by Moderator on 09-23-2010 12:23 PM - last edited on 09-23-2010 05:08 PM by Community Manager

3129_es_AR_splash.jpg

Hi Everyone,

Today we will be talking with Arnoud Star Busmann from Sutriana Creative Technology Solutions the creators of Sky Siege, one of the hottest augmented reality games on the market.  Sky Siege is available on SHOP4APPS and is currently a main feature promotion on the SHOP4APPS Argentina desktop webstore.  Sky Siege is also featured as a MOTOPICK, Motorola’s preferred apps listing.

Sky Siege is a simple game for Android phones that brings an awesome perspective to what gaming on mobile phones is now capable of. The game puts you into a turret in a war and has you shooting down planes and helicopters that are attacking. But instead of using joysticks, the game actually has you turn around to look around, look up to look up, and so on. Using your phone’s accelerometer and compass, you can jump right into the battle

I talked with Arnoud to learn a little more about their app.  Here’s what I found out…

1.) Tell us about your app?

Sky Siege was originally done for the iPhone, but we wanted to prove that advanced 3D games like Sky Siege can run on Android just as well. After some initial struggles, we got it to work and are proud to have one of the most cutting edge games on the Android platform. The game uses the compass and accelerometer to determine its position in a 3D hemisphere, with gunships coming from all directions in that space. The basis backdrop is a 3D virtual world, but we have also included an Augmented Reality view, which takes the battle to your lounge. We noticed that a couple of people started experimenting with pico-projectors, using Sky Siege as the game of choice – in the Android version we included a “projector mode”, which gives an amazing effect if you play it with a projector in a dark room. The app was received very well, had great reviews and downloads – at the moment we already have over 50,000 users (2 months after the first proper release). One word of warning took a while to sink in – the game demands serious hardware, and best to check first if your device is up for it. We tested it on the targeted Motorola devices of course, and they work fine.

2.) How many platforms do you develop on?

Currently iPhone and Android, but we are starting on a Blackberry project.

3.) I know this is your first app developed on the android platform.  Can you share your experience developing for Android?

It’s a very different world compared to iPhone. We had to do a lot more testing due to the multitude of devices out there, especially knowing that it wouldn't’t run on most of them. One thing we noticed was the passion of the Android device-owners. We received a lot of feedback (10% of the Google market buyers), some helpful, others not, but definitely vocal. The development process itself was a bit tougher than for iPhone. We had to develop it in C++ to get the frame-rate, and hooking that into Java via JNI was certainly not trivial. We were dependent on experiences shared by the Android community in the various forums. Once the documentation catches up with the new Android versions, this should become less of an issue. On the other hand, it is quite exciting to be pioneering these types of applications, and we’re fully committed to the Android platform long term. Commercially though we are glad that you have started Shop4Apps – it is definitely a step up from the Google market in terms of discovery opportunities for the apps. One general concern is the level of piracy on Android. No doubt a consequence of paid versions not being available for the Asian market, but we are quite shocked by the availability of our app on pirate sites – even at the low price we charge (for that reason), people still go to the effort of getting a free one.

4.) If there were one resource SHOP4APPS could provide which would be strategic to the success of your app either getting to the market or once launched to the market what would that be?

Possibly a testing team – could be volunteers, that would enable developers to submit their “beta-ready” apps for testing across the Motorola suite (and upcoming devices). I know there are emulators, but for apps like ours that doesn’t really work. And maybe open it up to other devices than Motorola J. The store looks great, and could be a proper rival destination to the Google market. Other than that, it would be great if reviewers that currently mainly look at the Google market start picking up on Shop4Apps as well – maybe stronger tie-ins with those guys would help increase discovery even further.

5..) Can we expect more apps from you soon?

We are working on Sky Siege 2 now, which will again break some new ground (and include more DRM protection J). In addition, we are working on some more serious concepts that we intend to launch in Q1 2011
