I'm new to the MOTODEV forums. I'm currently using standard Eclipse with the Android plugin and sdk. Are there good advantages to using the MOTODEV version of Eclipse? Also, if one uses that version can apps be created that will still run on non-Motorola devices?

YES but you can also install the motodev plugin into your existing eclipse !
i love motodev android app and android widg builders and then android emulator in an eclipse tab that you can actually zoom in and out of and rotate ! BUT apparently they are dropping that feature very soon !

Thanks Clive. I'll give the MOTODEV plug-in a whirl.

Sorry, for some reason this thread eluded my x-ray vision. :-)
Jerry, there is no lock-in or lock-out with MOTODEV Studio. If you try it and like it, we would love to have you on board. If you find that it's not to your liking, you can always switch to the same version of Eclipse (Helios SR1 currently) and your workspace and projects will continue to build just fine. You can build apps for any device, not just Motorola. If it leads to happy and productive developers who write great apps, we're hoping it drives consumers to choose our products in the marketplace. That's our motivation.
Clive, what feature are you referring to? We're not deprecating any feature any time soon that I'm aware of. You can embed or detach the emulator by simply choosing to display the view from the Window menu. It's true you can detach it and I find I prefer it that way, but you can move it about at will.
The one place where we're having problems with the OS keeping up is on 32-bit Mac OS. The upcoming release, version 2.2, will likely be the 32-bit last version running 10.5. After that, it will be all 64-bit and 10.6 or greater. For Mac OS X only. Windows and Linux will continue to ship as both 32- and 64-bit.
Cheers

i think you said that you were removing the android sdk installer from inside of motodev ?
i havent had a chance to uninstall the java 32bit jdk and motodev studio and android sdk and reinstall java 64bit jdk and android sdk and motodev studio yet so am unable to confirm that all those lovely extra integrated android sdk motodev studio features would still work in this alternative configuration

Ah, yes. That is true. The SDK download piece was something that we put into MOTODEV Studio long before there was an Android SDK and AVD Manager. We felt it was a benefit to our users. When the ADT plugins added similar functionality, we did not feel it was necessary to continue providing a competing feature. The functionality is still in the tools, it's just a matter of where it is coming from.
I was reading your post and it appeared to me that you were talking about the emulator view.
